What to do After a Car Accident

Awareness while driving, knowing your environment and the road conditions and employing defensive driving techniques can decrease your chance of ever getting into an accident. However; unfortunately, accidents do happen. What you do after an accident occurs can greatly impact the overall cost, as well as the clean-up and repair process.

The most important thing to remember to do even before an accident happens is to be prepared. Do you have a road emergency kit? Whether you buy a pre-prepared kit from a dealership or automotive supply store, or fill a bag with a few items you think you might need, make sure you check these items off:

  • Flashlight with batteries
  • Reusable Camera (a charged cell phone capable of taking pictures will suffice as well)
  • Cones/Warning Triangles
  • Emergency Flares
  • First-aid kit
  • Pen and paper

Having these items ready to use is a great first step in handling any incident that might happen while on the road.

So, you just got into an accident. What's next?

The most important thing to do is stay calm. Getting into an accident can be a stressful situation, but staying calm and following these steps will get you back on the road in no time.

  1. Safety First. If the accident is minor and no serious injuries occur, move your car to the side of the road and away from oncoming traffic as best as you can. If moving your car is not possible, make sure you and all of your passengers stay seated in your car with your seatbelts fastened. Call your local police station or 911 for assistance if needed and wait for them to arrive.
  2. Let's Trade Information. When it is safe to do so, exchange information with the other driver(s) involved in the accident. This information includes: Name, Address, Phone number, insurance company, policy number, driver license number and license plate number.
  3. Collect your own information. Use your camera or cell phone to take photographs of the damage of both your own vehicle and the other vehicles involved. Take photographs of the road conditions, any skid marks or debris and the positions of the vehicles. Either write down or take photographs of the license plates and insurance cards of the vehicles/owners involved in the accident. If emergency services respond to the scene, write down the police department, the report number, phone number, officer name and badge number. If there were witnesses, get their contact information
  4. File an accident report. Accident reports are available at police stations and at your department of motor vehicles, or on their website. A police report can help speed up the insurance claims process.
  5. Understand your insurance.  Prior to an accident ever occurring, you should know what your insurance will and will not cover. When an accident does occur, it is best to report the accident to your insurance company. Your insurance company will guide you through the process of working with the other driver's insurance company and having repairs made to your vehicle if needed.

Remember, it is always your choice where you get your repair work done. If your insurance company selects a certain repair shop, but you would prefer another one, work with both the repair shop of your choice and your insurance company to ensure your needs and expectations are met.
